The Teamsters union said that the master contract for its UPS Inc. package workers appears headed for rank-and-file approval, and that talks will resume with the package carrier to resolve issues that were rejected in side agreements.

For the first time, UPS Freight Teamsters have rejected the contract negotiated on their behalf by union leaders, the union announced.

UPS Freight, the less-than-truckload unit of UPS Inc., said it will raise its rates 5.9%, effective June 10.

Leaders of Teamsters union locals that represent UPS Inc. workers across the United States voted unanimously to endorse the tentative five-year agreement recently reached between UPS and the Teamsters.

UPS Inc. and the Teamsters union said they have reached tentative agreement on two new five-year labor contracts in the company’s small package and freight business units.

UPS Inc. Thursday reported a higher first-quarter profit on strong e-commerce sales, reaffirmed its full-year earnings guidance and said it plans to buy a Hungary-based logistics company.

UPS Inc. said it has appointed Cindy Miller president of UPS Europe and Derek Woodward president of Emerging Markets. Both appointments are effective April 30.
