Canada and its 13 provinces and territories agreed to knock down more hurdles to trading internally, as the country tries to reduce its reliance on the U.S. amid a punishing trade war.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Nov. 18 announced the sale of 792,000 tons of soybeans to China for the 2025-2026 marketing year, the biggest daily purchase in two years.

“It will definitely be positive for the cost of logistics,” said Mohammed Akoojee. “Up until now, the trade war has increased the cost of logistics in terms of freight rates and duties.”

The pause is fueling uncertainty over whether the biggest consumer of American soybeans will import as much as President Donald Trump’s administration claims to expect.

The decision follows the meeting between President Donald Trump and  Xi Jinping, a summit that produced a trade truce that set China back on the path to buying American farm goods again.

Wheat futures in Chicago jumped as China seeks its first U.S. shipments of the grain in more than a year, following orders for soybeans last week as part of a trade truce between the two nations.

Asked by reporters aboard Air Force One whether negotiations between the White House and Carney’s government would resume, Trump said: “No, but I have a very good relationship."

After months of posturing, arguing and threatening, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have essentially turned back the clock.

International shipping has been roiled by retaliatory port charges levied by the U.S. and China on each others’ ships in recent months, a move that pushed up freight costs.

The U.S. will also halve fentanyl-related tariffs on Chinese goods, while Beijing resumes purchases of soybeans and other American agricultural products.
