The latest company born out of General Electric Co. expects sales of its industrial engines fired by natural gas to benefit from the spread of renewables such as solar and wind.

Volvo Trucks North America says its D13TC engine’s turbo compounding unit will add 50 horsepower through waste heat recovery and will improve fuel efficiency by 7.5%. The com­pany believes the technology could reach the same level of market acceptance as its automated transmissions. But not every manufacturer believes turbo compounding is the best way to improve fuel efficiency.

Manufacturer Navistar International Corp. is phasing out the production of engines at its Melrose Park, Ill., plant and will turn the facility into a technical center for truck and engine testing.

Independent engine maker Cummins Inc. notched gains in second-quarter net income and revenue, pointing to higher demand for trucks and construction equipment in North America and China as well as stronger sales to mining and oil and gas customers, according to the company.

Cummins Inc. recently endorsed two fuel additives, marking the first time the diesel engine maker has taken such a step.

California environmental officials are working on a plan to require truck and engine manufacturers to extend emissions system warranties up to more than four times longer than current regulations require.
