Federal trucking regulators are exempting too many motor carriers from electronic logging device requirements and other regulations, creating “confusion and inconsistency in enforcement,” according to the organization representing roadside commercial vehicle inspectors.

Commercial motor vehicle enforcement officers patrolling U.S. and Canadian highways issued more than 57,000 citations and nearly 88,000 warnings for unsafe driving behaviors during 2018 Operation Safe Driver Week, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance reported Sept. 19.

In response to a request by two U.S. senators, roadside commercial motor vehicle inspectors later this month will spend a day collecting data on the condition and maintenance of rear trailer underride guards.

In a few weeks, law enforcement officials from across the continent will convene in Columbus, Ohio, to participate in the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s North American Inspectors Championship.

Nearly 1,600 commercial motor vehicles with critical brake violations were placed out of service during an unannounced Brake Safety Day law enforcement initiative in the United States and Canada in April, according to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.

Law enforcement officers issued nearly 39,000 citations and warnings to commercial vehicle operators for bad driving behaviors during Operation Safe Driver Week in October, according to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.

Roughly one out of every seven trucks and buses inspected during a one-day special brake safety law-enforcement effort in September was placed out of service for brake-related violations, according to the group that coordinated the inspections.

Commercial vehicle inspectors will issue citations to motor carriers operating vehicles without electronic logging devices beginning Dec. 18 but will not place vehicles out of service until April 1.

Nearly one of every four trucks that received comprehensive Level I inspections during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s International Roadcheck this summer were taken out of service, CVSA reported on Aug. 23.
