Maryland officials anticipate issuing bonds to help finance the rebuilding of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed in 2024 and disrupted a major economic gateway.

Investigator Todd Gianelloni said the NTSB believes that if the crew had used infrared thermal imaging to inspect the connections, the loose critical wire might have been discovered ahead of time. 

The vote is scheduled a day after Maryland officials more than doubled the estimated cost to replace the bridge and added two years onto the projected completion date — to 2030. 

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is raising concerns about Maryland’s oversight in replacing the Francis Scott Key Bridge and increasing costs for the federally funded project.

Officials said no one was injured in the blast the evening of Aug. 18, which prompted a mayday call when it was reported near the site of last year’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.
