New York routinely issues licenses to immigrants that may be valid long after they are legally authorized to be in the country, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Dec. 12.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit on Dec. 3 granted the agency’s Nov. 19 request to hold the case in abeyance, effectively putting the case on hold.

The language crackdown is part of a broader Trump administration campaign that’s upending the trucking industry, a critical pillar of the U.S. economy.

A group of state trucking associations has released an action plan identifying seven areas bad actors exploit in the industry with solutions to eliminate fraud and illegal operators.

“Our audit exposes yet another example of foreigners taking advantage of Minnesota services under Governor Walz’s watch,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said.

The administration’s latest move to flag nearly half of the driving schools as noncompliant doesn’t figure to disrupt the industry, experts say. But the scrutiny on immigrant drivers might.

“We are [reining] in illegal and reckless practices that let poorly trained drivers get behind the wheel of semi-trucks and school buses,” DOT Secretary Sean Duffy said.

The Transportation Department said Dec. 1 that it plans to revoke the certification of nearly 3,000 truck driving schools unless they can comply with training requirements in the next 30 days.

Mexican truck drivers hauling domestic U.S. freight recently were detained and saw their commercial vehicles seized by federal agents in a U.S. CBP enforcement effort targeting “cabotage.”

Under the agency’s original emergency order, carriers that didn’t comply could face penalties of up to $75,000 for every flight operated above the mandated limits.
