The deal will expand Uber’s offerings targeting business executives and wealthy consumers, a fast-growing segment of the business.

Uber or its fleet partners will buy 10,000 autonomous Rivian R2 robotaxis and make them available on the Uber app starting in San Francisco and Miami in 2028.

Uber riders in Las Vegas may be matched with a Motional Ioniq 5 autonomous vehicle when they request a regular UberX, Uber Electric or Uber Comfort ride at no additional cost.

At launch, Uber riders will have the opportunity to match with a Zoox robotaxi on eligible trips. It’s the first time Zoox has partnered with a third party.

The new feature is being rolled out nationwide despite an ongoing class-action lawsuit against the policy in California, filed by Uber drivers who argue that it is discriminatory against men.

Uber said it will focus on building the high-capacity charging hubs starting in the San Francisco Bay Area, L.A. and Dallas — markets where it plans to launch public robotaxi services.

New CFO Balaji Krishnamurthy has been with Uber for more than six years and is currently vice president of strategic finance and investor relations. Uber has agreed to purchase fleets of robotaxis.

Uber's quarterly results will likely take a back seat to the mounting threat posed by the growing self-driving fleets from prominent rivals like Alphabet's Waymo and Elon Musk's Tesla.

“Together, Mercedes-Benz, Nvidia and Uber will build a global platform that makes autonomous driving available to everyone,” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said.
