January truck tonnage fell 2.1% compared with year-ago levels, but ticked up 1.4% over December 2020 — a continuation of several months’ worth of sequential gains, American Trucking Associations announced.

Trucking closed the tumultuous year of 2020 on an upswing, as truck tonnage in December rose a seasonally adjusted 2.3% year-over-year and jumped 7.4% compared with November in the strongest month-over-month gain since summer, American Trucking Associations reported.

Truck tonnage in November declined a seasonally adjusted 3.8%, marking the eighth consecutive month of year-over-year declines, American Trucking Associations said Dec. 22. However, the ATA For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased 3.7% in November after falling 5% in October when measured month-to-month.

Truck tonnage in October declined a seasonally adjusted 8.7% when compared with year-ago levels, American Trucking Associations said Nov. 24.

Truck tonnage in September declined a seasonally adjusted 2.7% when compared with year-ago levels, marking the sixth consecutive month of year-over-year declines, American Trucking Associations said Oct. 20.

Truck tonnage in August declined a seasonally adjusted 8.9% when compared with year-ago levels, marking the fifth consecutive year-over-year decline, American Trucking Associations said.

Truck tonnage in July declined a seasonally adjusted 8.3% when compared with year-ago levels, and on a monthly basis was down 5.1% from June, according to ATA.

Truck tonnage in June declined 1.3% when compared with year-ago levels, but on a monthly basis surged 8.7% above May.

Truck tonnage in May declined 9.6% compared with year-ago levels, the steepest seasonally adjusted year-over-year percentage drop since a 10.7% decline in June 2009, American Trucking Associations reported.
