When I was a young man, I could not have predicted that I’d spend my career in the trucking industry, let alone become chairman of American Trucking Associations.

Just over a year ago, I delivered my first State of the Industry address at American Trucking Associations’ annual Management Conference & Exhibition in Las Vegas — four months after taking over as president and CEO of ATA. Then as now, I am honored to lead this prestigious organization.

The 12 months I’ve spent as chairman of American Trucking Associations provided a whirlwind of great experiences and key victories for trucking. They also provided some career highlights.

As the National Transportation Safety Board cites sleep apnea as a factor in New York City-area train crashes, the need for sleep apnea testing and treatment regulations will once again come to the forefront. The NTSB has been advocating for measures to reduce fatigue-related accidents in the transportation industry for years.

One trend over the past several years is “activity-based pay," which compensates drivers for required tasks other than driving, such as waiting to be loaded, loading or unloading trailers, washing trucks, or documenting their deliveries, to name a few.

Numerous studies by the Department of Transportation, the Association of State and Highway Transportation Officials, American Trucking Associations and the American Road and Transportation Builders Association have warned that the quality and quantity of U.S. transportation infrastructure is deficient and in dire need of permanent, long-term funding.
