Demand for trucks did not improve as 2025 progressed and what carrier executives have characterized as the longest North American freight market downturn in a half-century continued.

Yet the truck manufacturer is increasingly optimistic about the prospects for demand growth as 2026 progresses, lifting its full-year industrywide sales expectations by 15,000 trucks or 6%.

International Motors’ sales volume dived 34% year over year in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 15,800 trucks and buses from 23,800 in the year-ago period, parent company Traton said Jan. 20.

Transportation companies such as C.H. Robinson and XPO have already added services and warehouse space to support customers in Mexico that are shipping or are planning to ship to the U.S.

The world’s biggest farm machinery maker said in a statement to Bloomberg that it “has kept focus on supporting our customers and helping them build for the long haul.” 

Trump’s proposal represents a win for the auto and oil industries that argued the requirements pushed the bounds of available technology for getting more miles out of each gallon of fuel.

The Institute for Supply Management’s manufacturing index eased half a point to 48.2, according to data released Dec. 1. The measure has been below 50 for nine straight months.

The weak outlook for the maker of iconic green and yellow tractors comes as farmers have been hit hard by low crop prices and President Donald Trump’s tariff policies.

The company, whose parent is Traton Group, warned that high electricity and labor costs paired with rising pressure from Asian competitors are weighing on results.

“We are encouraged by several proposed adjustments that should help lower costs and ease implementation,” ATA Vice President of Energy and Environmental Affairs Patrick Kelly said.
