LISLE, Ill. — Navistar Inc. and Clean Energy Fuels Corp. unveiled a joint offensive on Feb. 1 to expand the reach of natural-gas-powered vehicles in the heavy-duty trucking market.

LISLE, Ill. — Navistar Inc. and Clean Energy Fuels Corp. unveiled a program that will provide natural gas-powered trucks to customers at the same cost as diesel vehicles, if the customers commit to purchase their fuel from Clean Energy.

Citing an abundant U.S. supply of natural gas, President Obama said in his State of the Union address Tuesday that “the development of natural gas will create jobs and power trucks and factories that are cleaner and cheaper.”

Clean Energy Fuels Corp. has unveiled a plan for the first phase of 150 new natural gas fueling stations, and said it anticipates opening 70 stations in 33 states by the end of the year.

Ryder System said it has signed its first leasing agreement under its “Flex-to-Green” program, which offers companies the option to incorporate alternative fuel vehicles into their fleets.

Supporters of a national network of natural gas fueling stations for motor carriers have invested an additional $150 million in the project, Clean Energy Fuels Corp. said Thursday.

Daimler Trucks North America said it has delivered its 1,000th truck powered by natural gas and added it was the first commercial vehicle manufacturer to reach that mark.

Southern California Gas Co. plans to add about 1,000 new natural-gas-powered trucks to its fleet over the next five years.

WASHINGTON — Natural gas holds a great deal of promise for the trucking industry as an alternative to diesel, but with the hurdles of infrastructure and costs, it’s rarely a viable option currently, trucking stakeholders said.
