Freightliner and Western Star customers will be able to choose from six Cummins engines for model-year 2027 trucks, including the first gasoline option Freightliner will make available.

Garden Grove, Calif.-based chassis and truck manufacturer Harbinger said the truck would be available as both a battery-electric vehicle and a plug-in hybrid model.

Medium-duty truck sales in January reached 12 consecutive months of year-over-year declines, according to Omdia Automotive. Classes 4-7 retail sales fell 16.6% to 16,035 units.  

Classes 4-7 retail truck sales for the month decreased 15.5% to 19,082 units from 22,586 a year earlier. Medium-duty sales haven’t trended ahead of the prior year since January 2025.

Kenworth and Peterbilt continue to build out their battery-electric tractor and truck portfolios, launching three new models each Dec. 9.

U.S. medium-duty truck sales dropped sequentially and compared with the prior year in October amid ongoing tariff headwinds and market uncertainty, according to data from Omdia Automotive.

President Donald Trump's use of tariffs as a cornerstone of his trade agenda has added to existing market uncertainties that make investing in equipment more difficult.

The bill is intended to expand enforcement to vehicles 10,001-26,000 pounds and will help align state statute with federal law under the interstate compact.

The new model is a battery-electric vehicle equipped with a gasoline-powered range extender that charges the battery when needed, enabling a range of up to 500 miles between charges.

Medium-duty truck sales also increased 26% sequentially from the 15,824 units reported in February. But notably, the results were dragged down by a lack of activity in Class 4.
