Amid wider economic uncertainty, sizable layoffs have continued to pile up for companies across many industries, including transportation — raising worker anxieties.

"This comes as AI adoption, softening consumer and corporate spending, and rising costs drive belt-tightening and hiring freezes,” Challenger, Gray & Christmas said in the report.

The total includes 3,400 workers that were furloughed over the summer at its Factory Zero plant in Detroit, where the electric Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra and Hummer EVs are made.

CEO Andy Jassy previously signaled that Amazon’s workforce would get smaller as the company increases its use of artificial intelligence to complete tasks normally handled by people.
