The European Union will pitch the U.S. on a critical minerals partnership to curb China’s influence, looking to shape the Trump administration’s push to strike global agreements this week.

The EU will suspend the retaliatory tariffs for another six months after President Donald Trump backed down from his threat to impose levies on some countries that opposed his push to annex Greenland.  

European Union lawmakers are expected to vote on ratifying the bloc’s trade deal with the U.S., restarting the process after President Donald Trump walked back his latest threat.

President Trump said he would not impose tariffs on goods from European nations opposing his effort to take possession of Greenland, citing a “framework" of a deal he has reached for the island.

The Parliament’s trade committee postponed the vote indefinitely on Jan. 21, casting doubt on whether the pact will ever get across the finish line. 

Rattled by President Trump's aggression toward Greenland, the EU is readying countermeasures against the U.S., including the  “trade bazooka" touted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Trump's threats have sparked outrage and a flurry of diplomatic activity across Europe, as leaders consider retaliatory tariffs and the first-ever use of the EU’s anti-coercion instrument.

The Trump administration threatened retaliation against the European Union in response to efforts to tax American tech companies, singling out prominent firms.

The new demands come as the two sides prepare to negotiate the next steps of this summer’s trade deal, which set a 15% tariff on most EU goods entering the U.S.

The European Commission will propose early next week a long-term mechanism that will also reduce the bloc’s existing quotas for foreign steel by almost half.
