DALLAS — Driver training on electronic logging devices will play an important role in the trucking industry’s transition to the federally mandated technology, an official with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration told an audience of carriers and technology providers.

American Trucking Associations said late last week it expects to file a court brief in support of the electronic logging mandate, after a legal challenge from the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.

A day after the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration released its final rule on the use of electronic logs for all trucks built since 2000, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association filed suit against the agency.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration last week announced its long-awaited final rule that will require carriers to use electronic logging devices to record drivers’ hours of service.

The federal rule requiring carriers to use electronic logging devices will dramatically accelerate the industry’s adoption of onboard technology, resulting in a market where some carriers will focus only on basic compliance while others will look for additional features to improve efficiency, suppliers and analysts said.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Dec. 10 announced its long-awaited final rule requiring that interstate drivers use electronic recording devices intended to enforce hours-of-service regulations, and reduce driver fatigue and paperwork for motor carriers and drivers.
