LAS VEGAS — Trucking fleets must accept some blame for the current driver shortage and be willing to adjust their operations in order to attract younger talent, two truckload executives said last week.

A bill Congress passed last month would open more job opportunities for veterans by allowing members of the military to obtain commercial driver licenses in the states where they’re stationed, even if they are away from home, the bill’s supporters said.

With the availability of so many recently discharged veterans, many of whom have operated heavy vehicles, and the need for qualified drivers, one would think that Washington would find a way to expedite the marriage of the availability with the need.

The trucking industry took a pause from its busy, round-the-clock pace last week to recognize the essential role that drivers play, not only for their employers but also in the nation’s economy.

Trucking companies, associations, industry suppliers and other businesses took time out last week to recognize the 3.1 million men and women who drive trucks in the United States as part of National Truck Driver Appreciation Week.

The Drivers Dreams program is seeking submissions from truck drivers for wishes the newly created program can make come true.
