CHENNAI, India — The world’s largest commercial vehicle maker, Daimler AG, is making one of its biggest-ever bets by pouring $850 million into production and sales operations here, in what is now the world’s fastest-growing market for trucks and buses.

LAS VEGAS — Executives at Western Star Trucks, Daimler AG’s North American niche brand, want to boost U.S. heavy-duty market share toward the 3% level from its current neighborhood of 1.2%, hoping that its new 4700 and another model to come will increase sales toward that level.

Daimler AG plans to increase its stake in Russia’s largest truck maker as part of its target of a 64% rise in truck sales by the end of the decade, Bloomberg reported Monday.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Martin Daum, president of Daimler Trucks North America, said the company’s previously announced layoffs at its production facilities will be “significantly lower” than the 1,300 jobs it had projected earlier this year.

Daimler Trucks North America said it was recalling all 110,000 of its 2006-2013 Freightliner, Western Star and Sterling trucks equipped with Detroit Diesel 13-, 15- and 16-liter engines to fix a defect the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said could cause accidents, fuel leaks and fires.

The National Highway Safety Administration said Daimler Trucks North America told the agency it is recalling more than 110,000 trucks because of potentially damaged engine fuel lines.

Daimler AG and MAN SE have stepped up their presence in China and India, respectively, Bloomberg reported Monday.
