CSX Corp. kicked off the first-quarter earnings reporting season on a down note as net income fell 19% to $356 million, or 37 cents per share, and revenue dipped 14% to $2.62 billion, including a drop of 37% in coal traffic.

Canadian Pacific Railway still is interested in exploring a merger with CSX Corp. even as Canada’s second-largest carrier continues to pursue Norfolk Southern Corp., CEO Hunter Harrison said.

The facility is a month shy of its second birthday, but Winter Haven, Florida, city and business leaders say the CSX intermodal terminal and surrounding logistics center already are bringing the economic development they wanted.

CSX Corp. jumped as much as 8% after the close of trading in New York, following a report that Canadian Pacific Railway approached the U.S. railroad about a takeover in January and was rebuffed.

CSX will close administrative offices in Huntington, the company said Jan. 18.

CSX Corp. reported fourth-quarter net income fell 5% to $466 million, or 48 cents per share, and announced that this year’s earnings are expected to trail 2015.
