Used Class 8 sales in the U.S. were down again in September, the average retail price fell, too, and likely steeper declines are ahead, ACT Research reported.

The average retail price in August of a used Class 8 vehicle was much higher compared with a year earlier but less than the month before, extending a trend, ACT Research reported.

The average used Class 8 retail sales price in April soared compared with a year earlier, as expected. But a closer vantage point showed it fell month-over-month for just the second time since July 2020, ACT Research reported.

February’s average retail sales price for a used Class 8 set another all-time record, besting January’s previous high by jumping beyond $94,000 — and sales may have hit their high point, according to ACT Research.

The average sales price for a used Class 8 vehicle sold in May set the all-time record, jumping ahead of April’s claim to that title, amid the trend of strong demand for trucks once again outpacing the available supply, ACT Research reported.

The average used Class 8 truck in March brought the third-highest price ever as demand rages on and supply is very tight, ACT Research reported.

The used truck market in November generated more demand and a higher average price for a Class 8 compared with a year earlier, ACT Research reported.

The Class 8 used truck market in August reflected the trend toward improving sales as prices remained below year-earlier levels, conditions that are expected to mark the full year, ACT Research reported.

Used Class 8 vehicles in July were, on average, younger, cost less and had about the same mileage compared to a year earlier, ACT Research reported.

The year-over-year average price of a used Class 8 vehicle in June declined for the 14th consecutive month.
