Nippon Steel won conditional U.S. approval for its $14.1 billion purchase of U.S. Steel, capping a lengthy saga in a tie-up that will create one of the world’s largest steel companies.

President Donald Trump ordered a review of the potential sale of U.S. Steel Corp. to Nippon Steel Corp., opening the door to amend a decision by his predecessor to block the transaction.

Biden announced his formal decision on Jan. 3 after the case was referred to him by a U.S. security review panel, ahead of a deadline early next week.

The president plans to formally block the $14.1 billion sale on national security grounds once the deal is referred back to him later this month, people familiar with the matter said.
