Intermodal Traffic Climbs 8.6% for Week
U.S. intermodal traffic rose 8.6% for the week ended Saturday from a year ago, the Association of American Railroads reported.
Container traffic gained 9.9% to 156,161 units, while trailer traffic edged up 1.2% to 25,056 units, AAR said in its weekly report.
Railroad carloads excluding intermodal rose 1.9% to 245,666 units, AAR said.
Railroad volume is considered an important economic indicator. Intermodal traffic, which tends to be higher-valued merchandise than bulk commodities, uses trains for the long haul and trucks for the shorter distance at either end of the trip.
