Schneider’s concerns over the early introduction of the new engine emissions standards ("EPA’s New Engine Standard: An Economic and Environmental Defeat Device," Opinion, 5-20, p. 9). The lower fuel economy and increased initial cost of the equipment will put a great strain on the trucking industry.

U.S. sales of Class 8 trucks fell 7% in April from a year earlier, to 11,882 units from 12,782. The year-over-year difference was milder than it had been in other recent months and followed a 10.9% drop in March and declines of more than 20% in the first two months of 2002.

The Commerce Department said Thursday U.S. orders for durable goods rose 1.1% in April, while revising the March figure upward from a 0.6% decrease to a 0.2% increase.
