Wabash to Cut 900 Jobs; Close Plants

Truck trailer manufacturer Wabash National Corp. said Thursday it will cut its workforce by 18% and close two assembly plants and a distribution center.

American Trucking Associations last week urged Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta to "immediately halt" federal efforts to require motor carriers to turn over their electronic tracking data for audits of their drivers’ hours-of-service records.

Business Inventories, Industrial Production Both Decline

U.S. business inventories totaled $1.19 trillion in June, down 0.4% from May for their fifth straight month of decline, the Department of Commerce said Wednesday. At the same time, the Federal Reserve said the nation’s industrial output experienced its 10th straight month of decline in July.
