Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he told Ontario's premier not to run an anti-tariff advertisement that prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to end trade talks with Canada.

Asked by reporters aboard Air Force One whether negotiations between the White House and Carney’s government would resume, Trump said: “No, but I have a very good relationship."

“We have achieved our goal, to make sure that conversation starts with the American people, and with their elected officials, and my goodness, it’s started all right,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said.

Trump had set a Nov. 1 deadline to raise the fentanyl-related tariffs he imposed on certain Mexican goods to 30% from 25%. The levies apply to products that are not protected by the USMCA.

Canada is launching an antidumping investigation into truck body imports from China just as Prime Minister Mark Carney is trying to ease trade tensions with the east Asian country. 

President Donald Trump said late Oct. 23 that he was ending “all trade negotiations” with Canada because of a television ad in that country opposing U.S. tariffs.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada is in “intensive negotiations” with the U.S. and that he expects to see President Donald Trump at the APEC summit in Gyeongju, South Korea, next week. 

Stellantis declined to comment on conversations with the government. It has confirmed it’s adding a third shift at an Ontario facility and described Canada as “very important” to its plans.

Trump’s tariffs have cast a chill over the Canadian automotive sector, but have also affected U.S.-based companies.
