Will the Uber model for transporting people revolutionize the trucking industry’s methods for transporting freight? In a word, no.

The technology track in transportation is forging ahead at a very rapid pace.

This is an interesting period in terms of the latest business challenges that truckers face — especially for “small-business” independent truck enterprises.

The Reason Foundation’s recently published policy study, “Truck-Friendly Tolls for 21st Century Interstates,” sparked discussion from Internet forums to board rooms on what the future will look like for trucking and for tolling.

It’s hard to believe, but on average, more than 90 people die each day in motor vehicle crashes across the United States.

The U.S, Department of Labor’s July 15 “interpretation” of the approach and perspective it will brandish under the Fair Labor Standards Act in audits and determinations of whether workers are deemed employees or independent contractors is far more a further revelation of a political agenda and shift in America than a balanced legal analysis of the proper application of a legal test in determining worker status.

The electronic logging mandate is upon us and can’t be ignored. Although we all have heard about the technical changes the mandate will bring, we haven’t heard as much about the effect it will have on operations.

Our country’s transportation infrastructure delivers everything our economy needs to stay healthy, similar to the blood that runs through our veins to deliver oxygen and nutrients.

Being chairman of American Trucking Associations is a tremendous honor — the capstone of a career in trucking that began for me many decades ago.
