CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A tearful Sherry Blake told jurors Jan. 29 she feels like a woman “betrayed” by the former boss who had considered her more like a “work wife” than an executive assistant: former Pilot Flying J President Mark Hazelwood.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - When former Pilot Flying J sales executive Dan Peyton learned a trucking company had been defrauded by his colleagues, he told jurors Jan. 18 he dialed up the truck stop giant’s then-president.

After more than a decade of watching Oregon and a handful of other states test alternatives to traditional gasoline taxes, more states, with the help of federal money, are now joining the quest.

In an 87-page report released on Jan. 1, the 21st Century Missouri Transportation Task Force, a 23-member group of lawmakers and industry experts, made a number of recommendations for improving the state’s nearly 34,000-mile highway system and more than 10,000 bridges, including an increase in the state’s gas tax.
