Lower-priced natural gas used for fueling trucks could alter the current intermodal market and shift some freight back to truckload service, a consultant said.

Diesel’s national average price fell for a fourth week, although slightly, dipping 0.9 cent to $3.925 a gallon, the Department of Energy reported last week.

Truckers buying fuel in Connecticut will get a bit of a break starting July 1 when the state tax on diesel drops 0.4 cents per gallon.

California environmental regulators have approved an update to the state’s long-term greenhouse-gas emissions plan that calls on the trucking industry to transition from diesel to mostly electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles by 2050.

American Trucking Associations said it would support such measures as a tax on crude oil, a national highway fee on cars and trucks and repatriation of corporate profits held overseas to pay for highways, given the transportation funding crisis and Congress’ refusal to raise fuel taxes.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) said Congress should approve modest increases to the federal fuel taxes as a way to finance the six-year transportation reauthorization bill and raise revenue for the Highway Trust Fund, which is quickly running out of money.
