Sales of used Class 8 trucks under $50,000 continued to fall during July, which helped drive up the average sales price, but at the same time underscored certain buyers have exited the market, according to ACT Research.

The average used Class 8 truck brought a higher sales price in May than in the same month a year earlier, but with inventories gradually building and growth in the freight market slowing down after last year’s boom, analysts are divided on the long-term outlook for values.

The price of the average used Class 8 truck in November rose by $8,000 to $47,675 compared with a year earlier as inventory tightened, ACT Research Co. reported, noting demand for the vehicles is slowing in some quarters.

Used truck sales rose in July, as did the average price in a hot market where finding inventory to buy or sell is a challenge, ACT Research Co. reported.

The average Class 8 truck sold in March underscored that more mileage on a younger truck need not be a detriment to a higher sales price — as the overall volume stayed in the mid-20,000 range.

Sales in February of used Class 8 trucks were flat year-over-year with the average price showing a modest uptick, ACT Research Co. reported as the formerly oversupplied market is in better shape.
