J&R Schugel celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024 and became 100% employee owned in 2014. The merger was effective Oct. 31.

Volume at the truckload division is taking a beating from tariffs, canceled infrastructure projects and the recent U.S. federal government shutdown, executives told analysts.

The company posted net income of $7.86 million, or 5 cents a diluted share, for the three months ended Sept. 30. That compared with $30.5 million, 19 cents, a year earlier.

“The reason you’ve seen spot rates up in the last couple of weeks — it’s been because of the enforcement activity,” said J.B. Hunt Chief Operating Officer Nick Hobbs.

The 100,000-square-foot plant is designed to process thousands of shipments weekly, serving the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and Maersk’s broader national network.

Freight cycles typically last 14 to 15 months, according to Werner CEO Derek Leathers, but the current downswing has gone on for double that. “It’s the worst one I’ve ever seen."

Ward, who took over as president in 2022, is credited with strengthening the association’s reach, expanding its programs and increasing engagement with its members.

ArcBest plans to launch a proprietary transportation management system in early 2026 that will be known as “ArcBest View,” top executives said.

“We’re most affected by the [tariff] instability in our industrial truckload base in the U.S.,” TFI CEO Alain Bédard said during a July 28 conference call with investors.

The Phoenix-based truckload motor carrier posted net income of $34.2 million, or 21 cents a diluted share, for the three months ending June 30. That was 68.7% higher than last year.
