Freight tonnage in February reached its highest level in three years, American Trucking Associations reported March 24.

The ATA For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased 0.4% in January to 113 from 112.5 in December as the industry regained some freight activity it lost in 2025.

"While I’d like to predict a strong rebound in freight levels through the upcoming holidays, I can’t," says American Trucking Associations Chief Economist Bob Costello.

Freight tonnage in July showed an increase sequentially but a decrease from the prior year, American Trucking Associations reported Aug. 19.

The freight market has remained choppy, with demand not demonstrating any clear patterns during the month of May, American Trucking Associations reported June 24.

The freight market experienced another monthly dip in tonnage due to choppy market conditions in April, American Trucking Associations reported.

The U.S. freight market slowed in March after a robust February, but data for Q1 of 2025 as a whole suggested a turnaround was underway, according to American Trucking Associations.

The freight market didn’t change much starting the new year with tonnage remaining sequentially the same for January, American Trucking Associations reported.

The freight market finished the year on a downward slope as tonnage declined on both a monthly and annual basis in December, American Trucking Associations reported.

The ATA For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index decreased 1.8% to 112.5 in November from 114.6 in October. The index is down 1% compared with November 2023.
