Deep snow — over a foot extending in a 1,300-mile swath from Arkansas to New England — halted traffic, canceled flights and triggered wide school cancellations Jan. 26. 

The storm is expected to bring a crippling ice storm from Texas through parts of the South, potentially a foot of snow from Oklahoma through Washington, New York and Boston, and a punch of bitter cold.

A massive winter storm will sweep across a huge swath of the U.S. starting Jan. 23, freezing Texas before roaring up the East Coast, where New York City is seeing a strong chance of heavy snow.
