The change, which has not been confirmed by the Indian government, would boost Trump's efforts to pressure Moscow to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.

The president told European officials he’s willing to impose the tariffs on India and China — but only if EU nations do so as well.

“President Trump has not put tariffs on China because those negotiations are ongoing. And the war in Ukraine is certainly part of that discussion,” U.S. Ambassador Matthew Whitaker said.

Trump said in a social media post Sept. 1 that India offered to reduce its tariffs on U.S. goods to zero, without saying when the concession was made.

The Indian government estimates the tariffs will impact $48.2 billion worth of exports.

President Donald Trump announced plans earlier this month to double tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 50% over its purchases of Russian oil.

Shipments are expected to surpass 4 million barrels a day in August and September, reaching levels not seen since the start of the year, according to some market participants.

Ties between the Asian neighbors deteriorated after a bloody border skirmish five years ago, but relations have recently been on the mend.

An additional 25% tariff was tacked on India for its purchases of Russian oil.

Trump last week announced a 25% rate on Indian exports. He also threatened more duties if India continued to buy oil from Russia.
