The looming adoption of a mandate that will require maritime vessels to burn cleaner fuel is projected to put upward pressure on diesel prices next year, but transportation experts are more concerned about how the change will affect the supply of diesel fuel for trucks.

President Donald Trump resumed his attacks on OPEC, saying the world is too fragile to handle a price hike and urging the cartel to “relax and take it easy.”

The U.S. average retail price of diesel increased ever so slightly the week of Feb. 4, rising to $2.966 a gallon, one-tenth of a cent higher than last week.

As fleets know, many variables can affect test results for truck fuel-saving technologies and practices.

The U.S. average retail price of diesel dropped 1.1 cents to $2.965 a gallon for the week of Jan. 21, despite an increase in crude oil prices to $53 per barrel, or $3 higher than a week before.

Diesel prices started off 2018 low, but as the year comes to a close, the average price of diesel is more than 20 cents higher than in 2017.
