Cummins Inc.’s fourth-quarter operating profit and sales fell on weaker North American trucking and construction markets, the engine maker said Wednesday.

Cummins Inc. said it has received federal certification that its new 15-liter engine meets the coming 2014 greenhouse-gas standards, the latest sign that North America’s heavy-duty truck and engine makers are making headway in preparing for the new rule.

Cummins Inc. has received the first Environmental Protection Agency certification for meeting 2014 fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas rules, the engine maker said Monday.

Cummins Inc. widened its lead in the race to sell Class 8 truck engines during the first half of 2012, providing 63,802 units to customers for a 42.2% market share, up from 34.5% a year earlier, WardsAuto.com reported.

Daimler AG and its joint-venture partner, China’s Beiqi Foton Motor Co., said they will build a $166 million plant with the capacity to make as many as 45,000 engines a year for its trucks to serve the fast-growing Chinese market.

LISLE, Ill. — Navistar Inc. has formally submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency a 13-liter heavy-duty engine model that it says meets current federal emissions standards.

The Manufacturers of Emission Controls Association said even though its members installed more than 24,000 diesel retrofit devices last year, more government incentives are needed to upgrade the older diesel engines in operation.

The Manufacturers of Emission Controls Association said its members sold 24,640 diesel engine retrofit devices in 2010.

Diesel engine maker Cummins Inc. said it expects significant sales and profit growth in 2011 and in future years.

Cummins Inc. maintained its market-share lead in Class 8 engines during 2010, although Detroit Diesel Corp. grabbed a bigger portion of the market, according to WardsAuto.com.
