Tighter emissions standards for heavy-duty engines produced starting in 2027 will make leasing more attractive, said Dean Vicha, president of NationaLease.

American Trucking Associations is asking EPA to re-evaluate and make adjustments to its forthcoming nitrogen oxide emissions rules for 2027 model-year heavy-duty trucks.

A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, confirmed the plans, which were first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Under the new proposal, tailpipe emissions will have to be reduced by 90% by the middle of the next decade compared with the current goal of a 100% reduction.

“We are encouraged by several proposed adjustments that should help lower costs and ease implementation,” ATA Vice President of Energy and Environmental Affairs Patrick Kelly said.

ATA President Chris Spear emphasized the federation's active role in this year’s regulatory changes, including in a meeting with then-presidential candidate Donald Trump last summer.

The EPA proposal published Sept. 30 applies to everything from residential air conditioning to retail food refrigeration and semiconductor manufacturing.
