More than 550 commercial driving schools in the U.S. that train truckers and bus drivers must close after investigators found they employed unqualified instructors, among other issues.

The language crackdown is part of a broader Trump administration campaign that’s upending the trucking industry, a critical pillar of the U.S. economy.

The administration’s latest move to flag nearly half of the driving schools as noncompliant doesn’t figure to disrupt the industry, experts say. But the scrutiny on immigrant drivers might.

The Transportation Department said Dec. 1 that it plans to revoke the certification of nearly 3,000 truck driving schools unless they can comply with training requirements in the next 30 days.

Top leaders at the Commercial Vehicle Training Association and the National Association of Publicly Funded Truck Driving Schools are expressing “serious concerns” to federal trucking regulators that entry-level driver training enforcement has not kept pace with the threat posed by unscrupulous entities graduating drivers without adequate preparation.  

FleetForce Truck Driving School finalized a market expansion totaling six new training program centers in Florida, the driver training company announced Feb. 21.

The owner of a California trucking school has pleaded guilty to swindling the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs out of more than $4 million in tuition and other payments after falsely certifying that hundreds of veterans had attended classes they never took, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California announced July 29.

Veriha Enterprise, which owns a Wisconsin-based trucking company of the same name, announced that it will open a driving school in January to provide training for heavy-truck driver candidates and support future fleet growth.
