GM is bracing for the early expiration of $7,500 in consumer tax credits for the purchase of EVs added during the Biden administration that President Trump and the Republican Congress have cut.

The world’s two largest economies have yet to reach a trade deal, and manufacturers in China have been seeking alternative markets for their goods as they brace for higher U.S. tariffs.

The country’s trade shortfall with the world was C$4.9 billion ($3.5 billion) in July, according to Statistics Canada data released Sept. 4.

Initial claims increased by 8,000 to 237,000 in the week ended Aug. 30. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for 230,000 applications.

The appeal calls for putting the case on a highly expedited schedule with arguments in early November, according to filings reviewed by Bloomberg.

The Canadian prime minister said more meetings are taking place in Washington involving officials including Michael Sabia, Canada’s top civil servant.

“If we don’t win that case, our country is going to suffer so greatly,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “These deals are all done; I guess we’d have to unwind them.”

Trump told reporters that the U.S. would appeal to the high court for relief as soon as Sept. 3 because “it would be a devastation for our country” if the appeals court ruling was left in place.

Trump said in a social media post Sept. 1 that India offered to reduce its tariffs on U.S. goods to zero, without saying when the concession was made.

Tariff tensions are making the North American farm market the most uncertain in the world even as conditions in Europe and Asia start to improve.
