XPO to Cease Operations at Pennsylvania Warehouse
XPO Logistics will cease operations at its warehouse in Bethel Township, Pa., this month, according to a notice it filed March 11 with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry.
鈥淴PO Logistics has been informed that its customer is making a business model change to go with a different provider, which results in the end of XPO鈥檚 operation at the facility located at 41 Martha Drive, Bethel, PA (the 鈥淔acility鈥),鈥 the company wrote in its Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry.
XPO Logistics ranks No. 1 on the Transport Topics Top 50 list of the largest logistics companies in North America, a position the company has held since 2017. It ranks No. 3 on the TT Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America.
Ninety-two people work for XPO at that location. The layoffs are expected to take place between May 11 and May 25. But according to a company spokesman, the layoff notice was just a procedural filing, and none of the employees will remain unemployed.
鈥淲e had to make this procedural filing, but the good news is that these employees won鈥檛 be losing their jobs,鈥 a company spokesperson said in an e-mail. 鈥淭hey will all either be going with our customer鈥檚 new provider or getting other jobs nearby with XPO.鈥
XPO Logistics didn鈥檛 identify the customer.
The WARN Act is federal legislation that offers protection to workers, their families and communities by requiring employers to provide notice 60 days in advance of a covered-business closing and covered-business mass layoff.
