The White House made it clear to Congress last week that it does not want the transportation appropriations bill to prohibit funding for the hours-of-service rulemaking when the bill lands on President Clinton’s desk.

Meanwhile, House members in favor of the ban were collecting signatures for a letter they intend to send to Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.), chairman of the transportation subcommittee in the House of Representatives.

The ban on funding the Department of Transportation’s development of the hours-of-service proposal is included in the Senate version of the Transportation appropriations bill. Wolf has said he opposes the provision.

The White House made its feelings known about the effort to halt the hours-of-service proposal in a Sept. 11 letter to Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. The letter stopped short of threatening a presidential veto if the ban is part of the transportation funding bill.
