NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Volvo Trucks North America teased plans March 16 to launch a new heavy-haul and vocational truck in the third quarter of 2026 based on the same platform as its revamped VNL and VNR on-highway tractors.

Magnus Koeck, VTNA vice president of strategy, marketing and brand management, said that the truck — code named “X” — was set to begin production in 2027. The information was shared at the end of a media briefing at the Technology & Maintenance Council’s 2026 Annual Meeting and Transportation Technology Exhibition.

“You will see something from Volvo that you’ve never seen before. I promise you it will be unexpected. It will be very exciting and also very extreme,” said Koeck.

“It’s going to be a vocational truck, but it will cover everything from heavy-haul to concrete mixers to refuse,” he added. “We are not well known for this in North America, but we have big plans.”

VTNA’s current vocational lineup comprises the VNX heavy-haul tractor and VHD 300 and 400 models. A VTNA spokeswoman declined to comment on the models’ future March 16.

But after a $400 million overhaul of its flagship manufacturing plant in Dublin, Va., and as construction continues on a $700 million assembly plant in Monterrey, Mexico, VTNA’s ambitions have flowered, particularly since the VNR and VNL revamps.

The first VNRs rolled off the production line at the New River Valley plant in Dublin in February. VTNA relaunched the diesel VNR a year ago at TMC 2025.

Production of the latest iteration of the VNL began in October 2024 at New River Valley. The revamped VNL was launched in January 2024.

Both redesigns and X are part of why Volvo Group executives felt confident enough in November 2024 to say they were targeting a 25% share of the North American heavy-duty truck market by 2030.

In 2025, VTNA’s North American heavy-duty truck market share was 8.4%, down from 9% in 2024, the parent company said, while Mack Trucks’ share rose to 8% from 6% due to an improved supply chain and relatively strong demand in the vocational segments.

Historically, Mack has been the stronger of the two Volvo Group divisions in North America in the vocational segment of the truck market, but Koeck stressed Volvo’s existing strength elsewhere in the globe, particularly Latin America

“We know this business and we will start to focus, of course, more on that also here in the U.S. and Canada because we deserve that,” he said, “and we will have a product now thanks to the new platform that will support our ambitions.”
