Virtual Weigh Stations Come to New Jersey
New Jersey is the latest state to implement virtual weigh stations.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation鈥檚 NJPass will allow pre-enrolled trucking fleets to bypass the state鈥檚 trio of weigh stations on I-78, I-80 and I-295. Enrolling companies will pay an annual fee calculated by fleet numbers and the length of time the company elects to participate in the program.
Gail Toth, executive director of the New Jersey Motor Truck Association, said her organization was excited about the virtual weigh stations for which it had advocated for six years.
NJDOT partnered with International Road Dynamics Inc. to develop NJPass. Its electronic credentialing and screening processes completed New Jersey鈥檚 compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration鈥檚 Commercial Vehicle Information Systems and Networks Safety Program.听
鈥淭his system will help to improve the operation of New Jersey鈥檚 weigh stations by focusing on higher-risk carriers and provide more efficient use of our limited New Jersey State Police resources,鈥 said Paul Truban, manager of the Bureau of Freight Planning and Services for NJDOT, which expects the change to save fleets fuel and time at weigh stations.
The State Police Transportation Safety Bureau operates New Jersey鈥檚 weigh stations.
鈥淣JDOT hopes the system will improve safety and congestion on state roads,鈥 department spokesman Kevin Israel said.
