Click image to enlarge The shutdown of Consolidated Freightways on Labor Day in 2002 shocked the industry and, temporarily at least, boosted the fortunes of less-than-truckload freight rivals Arkansas Best Freight System, Yellow Transportation and Roadway Express.
Yellow and Roadway would merge, becoming YRC Worldwide in 2006, and survived its own brush with bankruptcy following a global economic downturn in 2007-08. Arkansas Best is now ArcBest Corp. and has added expedited transportation, freight brokerage and household goods moving to its LTL service offering.
