California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) plans to ask state regulators to require the state’s petroleum refiners and gasoline sellers to cut greenhouse-gas emissions by 10%, the New York Times reported Wednesday.Environmental groups expected the order to boost the market demand for corn-based ethanol and biodiesel fuels, and to jump-start the introduction of experimental fuels, the Times reported.The proposal would require petroleum refiners and gasoline marketers to reduce carbon content of their fuels by 2020.The governor’s executive order asks state air regulators to take up the governor’s challenge, the Times said. The California Air Resources Board will be responsible for drawing the blueprints to carry out the order, with the help of advisers from the University of California, Berkeley. Caltrans, as the state’s transportation department is known, was scheduled to outline the transportation components of the governor’s plan late Wednesday, the agency said.
