The Port of Tacoma, Wash., said it has launched an 18-month pilot project to expand trade with China, particularly U.S. exports to that country.

The 18-month 鈥楩uzhou project,鈥 to be funded jointly by the city of Tacoma and the port, will focus on Fuzhou, a Chinese port city with a population of more than 6 million and the capital city of China鈥檚 Fujian province.

Tacoma and Fuzhou have been sister cities since October 1994.

鈥淐hina is now Tacoma鈥檚 largest trading partner by both volume and by dollar value, and Fuzhou is a key gateway to this market,鈥 said Port of Tacoma Commissioner Connie Bacon. 鈥淎s we continue to strengthen our relationship, both the people of Fuzhou and Tacoma will benefit.鈥

The project will officially be launched Friday, the port said in a statement.
