Trucking companies that hire Pennsylvanians are having to resort to unusual means to conduct pre-employment screening since the state revoked access to the state’s driver records for background-check provider DAC Services.

Pennsylvania took action after an investigation revealed that two companies that had bought driver records from DAC resold them over the Internet without checking on the buyers, a violation of federal and state privacy laws.

The action has slowed the screening process for some companies looking to hire drivers and forced them to look elsewhere for records.

DAC, which sells information on job applicants to 85% of the top 200 motor carriers in the United States, is working with the state to reinstate its access to Pennsylvania driver records. In the meantime, the state has created special fax and e-mail options for trucking companies wanting to get driver records directly from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
