Transportation officials in central Florida are embarking on a study of traffic and freight movement in the Orlando metropolitan area that they say takes an innovative approach.

	Florida officials hope a two-year study will help clear traffic jams and speed the flow of freight.

Metroplan Orlando – the transportation planning arm of Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties — has commissioned a two-year, $800,000 study. The Florida Department of Transportation, Port Canaveral and Brevard County are also involved in the project.

The goal is to obtain a thorough understanding of the freight, goods and services movement in the Orlando area, as well as trends in traffic and freight movement.

Dennis Hooker, manager of technical services for Metroplan, said that in developing the parameters for the evaluation, he found what the agency wanted to know had never been studied.
