Oberstar Suggests Size Test
Pilot Project Could Weigh Highway Impact
WASHINGTON — Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minn.), a key transportation legislator and a longtime opponent of increasing truck sizes and weights, told Transport Topics he would now support a pilot study of larger vehicles on U.S. highways.
“I do think that we should have a pilot project where we really test the effect of heavier vehicles, longer vehicles, on the road surface,” said Oberstar, the new chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.In a Feb. 16 interview with TT reporters and editors, the 17-term legislator also said larger trucks would have to pay higher fees and be segregated from other traffic.For the full story, see the Feb. 26 print edition of Transport Topics.
