The trucking industry needs to reach into its pockets and come up with the money to pay for more parking spaces for big rigs, Natso Inc., the national trade association representing the truck stop and travel plaza industry, said last week.

The Alexandria, Va.-based association said this could be done by collecting $300 per truck and putting it into a parking trust fund.

Natso also called for closing unneeded rest areas so government money could be reallocated to areas where more parking is needed. And it urged government to remove barriers to private sector development.

Natso has long insisted that there is ample parking space for trucks at privately owned truck stops. The trade association also has argued that state governments should allow private development of rest areas along Interstate highways rather than using taxpayer money.
