A representative of the unionized less-than-truckload sector told his audience at the National Press Club lunch Nov. 5 that three areas exist where his carrier-members do not want to see changes.

Timothy P. Lynch, president of the Motor Freight Carriers Association, said he would oppose on-board data recorders in trucks and any change in how drivers are paid.

Perhaps the most controversial item on his list, Lynch said he would oppose changes to the current hours-of-service limits on truckers. However, he would support a 15-hours-on model if a change in the regulations was inevitable.

MFCA represents six unionized LTL carriers, including the “Big Four,” comprised of Consolidated Freightways, Roadway Express, Yellow Freight System and ABF Freight System, in their contract negotiations with the Teamsters union.
