The quick return to an 80% meals expense tax deduction, supported by trucking and passed by the House of Representatives in March, may not come up for Senate consideration for at least two weeks, said the press secretary for Majority Leader Trent Lott.

The Senate is more likely to discuss the measure when it is called up on its own calendar. Also, it is unlikely the Republican leadership would consider the bill on a voice vote, a source close to the situation said.

He said April 25 that no action on the legislation was either scheduled or anticipated for the two weeks.

The accelerated tax deduction passed by the House March 9 is part of the minimum wage bill that President Clinton has threatened to veto because of its $122 billion in tax breaks over the next decade.
